Basic Pay

The AFPRB has recommended a general basic pay increase of 3.3%; however trained Privates and Lance Corporals, Lieutenants and Captains will receive 3.8%. In addition the pay of 2nd Lieutenants will be increased to better allow the Services to compete for better graduate recruits.

The X Factor
The X Factor, which is included in basic pay to recognise the relative disadvantages of service life compared to civilian employment, remains unchanged at 12%.

Accommodation Charges

The Service Families Accommodation (SFA) charges (less water and sewerage charges) have risen between 5.3% for the best quality senior officers' accommodation to 3.3% for Other Ranks. There is no increase in charges for Grade 4 accommodation. This will mean rises from just under £4.83 per week for senior officers to 21 pence per week for Other Ranks in the poorest accommodation. Single accommodation charges will increase by between 3.3% for Grade 1 to no increase at all for Grade 4 accommodation. This is the third year running that there has been no increase in Grade 4 accommodation.

Northen Ireland Allowances

Allowances

Allowance Details
NI Resident Supplement (NIRS) £4.72 daily. Designed to recognise and compensate ;you for the pressures under which you and your family live and operate whilst in NI.
NI Compensatory Food Allowance (NICFA) £1.36 daily. It is an allowance designed to compensate MA personnel who are not fed under service arrangements.
Accommodation Charges There is no accommodation charge for single and MU personnel.
Married Unaccompanied Service Allowance (MUSA) £4.29 daily. Designed to compensate individuals for the disadvantages of serving unaccompanied in NI.
Longer Service Separated Allowance (LSSA) Normal rules for LSSA apply as for all theatres.
Operational Telephone Allowance (OTA) Qualifying individuals are entitled to 20 mins free telephone time per week. Full details from your RAO and NISOP G129.
Car Insurance If you incur additional motor insurance premiums as a result of moving to NI you may reclaim the difference. Full details from your RAO.
Annual Leave Allowance (ALA) All personnel receive the same basic ALA of 30 working days.
NI Long Weekend (NILW) Individuals are able to receive up to 7 NILW within any one leave year in addition to their ALA. Full details from your RAO.
Travel Warrants

Subsistence Allowance on Leave There are occasions when travelling to or from leave that individuals may have to include an overnight stop-over for which there is an allowance. Full details from your RAO.
British Forces Post Office (BFPO) Service personnel and their dependants may send Forces Air Letters (FAL) to family in GB and BFPO addresses. FALs are available from your local Post Room or BFPO.
Welfare Transport Dependants of Service personnel may be entitled to use Welfare Transport for visits to shopping centres, hospitals, church services etc. Further details can be obtained from your unit MTO.

R&R One period of R&R during a 6 month tour. 13 nights at home, 2 days of travel. R&R flights from Belfast and Londonderry to GB and NEW destinations as appropriate.
20 working days (4 weeks) Post Operational Tour Leave (POTL) Based on a 6-month tour. POTL is adjusted proportionally for shorter or longer tours. POTL is 'Grant' leave and does not come out of annual leave entitlement.
Additional Carry Over of 15 working days leave (3 weeks) If you cannot take all your leave, due to Op BANNER, the carry over period can be extended further if necessary.
Extra Family Travel warrants - UK based families Two travel warrants, or mileage allowance claims, during the tour to permit spouses resident outside UK to visit close relatives within the UK.
Extra Family Travel - Germany based families Two return journeys for a 6-month tour from point of departure in Germany to destination in the UK. Can be either air travel or mileage allowance, including ferry, or Euro tunnel, costs. Travel allowance may also be transferred to close relatives for reverse travel.
Internet Internet access can be made through all HIVEs and main library locations.
Insurance Allowance Provided that you have kit insurance and have sent un-accompanied baggage in and out of theatre you are eligible for up to £70 insurance allowance refund. See RAAC Chap 9, Sect 2.
Newspapers Daily and Sunday newspapers generally are readily available through NAAFI and other outlets. Where they are not available, welfare newspapers on a scaling of 1 per 7 pers are provided.
NAAFI NAAFI outlets located in theatre providing usual consumables as well as soft drinks, cards, flower delivery service and beer (as permissible under theatre regulations).
Operational Fitness Equipment Rowing Machines, Heart Rate Monitors, Step machines, static bicycles and other eqpts are readily available for use in theatre.
BFBS Radio Transmitting on 1287 AM frequency, 24 hours a day. Currently in Lisburn only. Aim to extend radio coverage throughout NI with links to BFBS worldwide.
Audio-Visual Equipment Bde Welfare Funds meet costs of providing TV and hi-fi eqpt. This includes purchasing and maintaining TVs, Satellite systems and hi-fi for gymnasia, although units are required to purchase/ rent Sky cards.
Combined Service Entertainment (CSE) Shows 4/5 major shows each year throughout NI. Free for Serving personnel
Adventure Training Centres There are 3 major (Army-sponsored) outdoor pursuit centres in NI where off-duty service personnel can enjoy a range of activities with short notice booking available. Additionally, units can take advantage of the NI Svcs Parachute Centre and other amenities including cinemas, swimming pools, saddle clubs etc.
Welfare Grants There is scope for roulement units to obtain limited support from welfare funds to purchase items such as table-tennis tables etc or to offset costs of Adv Trg. Detail can be found in NISOP G127.
Library Service Consignments of books are supplied to all Bn Coy size locations on a monthly basis. Other library facilities, with Internet access, are available throughout NI. All locations have a good selection of board games that are routinely replaced through Bde Welfare Funds.
Medal You will qualify for the GSM(NI) after 30 days in NI and for the ACSM on completion of 1080 days (accumulated) in theatre.
